How Motorcycle Radiator Works and How to Repairs It

Motorcycle — The components that exist on the motorcycle radiator is very much, it requires maintenance to keep the radiator working optimally. Sometimes there are users who use ordinary water for radiators, but this is not recommended by motorcycle manufacturers. Because it can cause rust on the engine, in general the water will boil at a temperature of 100 degrees Celsius but by using the boiling point coolant to increase can exceed 150 degrees Celsius.

Radiator Function on Motorcycle

Radiator is a component on a motorcycle engine serves as a heat release absorbed by cooling water after rotating inside the engine, consequently coolant temperature becomes down. Radiators are very important for machines that have a large capacity, because without radiator the engine will produce excessive heat. So the engine power is not maximized, and worse the piston will lock because of it.

Motorcycle Radiator Components

Radiator

The radiator consists of two water tanks, namely the upper tank and the bottom tank, in the upper tank there is a coolant charging hole into the radiator inlet. While the bottom tank there is an outlet to the engine and the exhaust pits.
In the radiator often occurs damage due to a collision so that the radiator leaks, broken or bent. Other causes because of the life of the radiator, can it be fixed? Depending on the severity of the damage.

how to repair radiator

If the leak can be slightly repaired with mixed glue that is usually sold in the spare part store, or use a special liquid radiator stop leak. This fluid serves to patch the fine leak inside the radiator, this liquid contains the active substance and film layer. Some brands that are super x, Prestone, Wynn, Rislone, Bar's Leak and others, if seriously damaged the last step to take the replacement.

Coolant

Coolant is a fluid that serves to keep the engine temperature to be stable and not experiencing excessive heat. Coolant is required to have properties that can keep the engine temperature and does not cause rust and damage to the engine. Radiators should not use regular water, but motorcycle manufacturers recommend using special radiator water or coolant. Because ordinary water does not contain anti-rust but cause rust. And the boiling point of the water is only 100 degrees centigrade, while the engine temperature can reach 115 degrees so all ordinary water will evaporate.

While the coolant has a boiling point and freezing point better than ordinary water, and each coolant has a different substance content so it is not advisable to mix it. Coolant may be replaced with a different brand as long as it is watered thoroughly, so there is no mixing of the substances contained in each coolant, as each manufacturer has their research.

Reservoir

The reserve tank for the coolant that is usually positioned outside the radiator, function so that the coolant has a long period to increase the amount of coolant on the radiator.
Radiator Hose radiator serves as a rotation of the coolant, so if the radiator hose damaged will cause leakage coming from the hose.

Radiator Pump

Serves to speed up the coolant rotation in the cooling system, so that the cooling process becomes faster and the temperature are maintained. Damage to the radiator pump usually occurs on the rubber seal between the engine oil and water radiator damaged, consequently coolant will run out because mixed with engine oil. This is very dangerous for the performance of machine because it causes severe broken.

If the coolant runs out quickly and there are no leakage from the outside of the radiator component, there may be a leak in the rubber seal between the engine oil and the coolant. Actually this can be estimated by measuring the engine oil duty when performing a replacement, if when dumped engine oil dosage is more than the manufacturer's provisions. Example Honda SH150i has a dose of 800 milliliters to 1 liter so it can surely coolant mixed with engine oil.

Radiator Fan

Cooling fan located around the radiator because it is useful to help cool the coolant, the way the fan works there are two electrical systems and mechanical systems. The electrical system of the power source comes from the battery, which rotates when the temperature sensor expands so that it touches the metal from the electric fan switch. The temperature sensor will expand if the engine temperature has reached 105 degrees Celsius, so if less than that temperature the radiator fan will not rotate.

While the radiator fan of the mechanical system rotates following the rotation of the crankshaft, thus simply adding the load on the engine rot although only a few grams. The advantages are rarely damaged because of the way it works that simple.

Close Radiator

The main function of the radiator cap is to keep the radiator water from spilling out, the radiator cap also limits the expenditure of water vapor during coolant inside the boiling radiator. This limitation occurs when the radiator cap gets pressure by water vapor if it reaches 108 - 137 kpa (1,1 - 1,4 kgf.cm2,16 - 20 psi).

Thermostat

Thermostat is an automatic valve that works to regulate the temperature of the heat on the machine, how to limit the amount of coolant for the machine quickly reach the working temperature of 80 degrees Celsius. How it works when the cold engine will close the coolant lane coming from the bottom radiator to the engine. Then when the hot coolant path from the bottom radiator will be opened slowly if the engine temperature has reached 85 degrees Celsius, and the coolant path from the top radiator will be closed.

How to Take Care of Motorcycle Radiators

Always check the radiator's reservoir tank, do not let coolant be below the lower limit or left blank.

The addition of coolant should not cross the upper or upper limit, to cause the coolant to spill through the respirator tank breathing hole.

Drain coolant every km 16,000 or 1 ½ years, so as not to cause the crust on the radiator path and maintain coolant performance.

Wash with water radiator grille and spray using wind spray gun to keep dust and dirt lost, otherwise fix the grille if there is a crook.

Watch the speedometer if a red light is on, meaning the motorcycle is overheated.

OK bro so long a brief explanation, the end of the word priority to drive safety and not arrogant street highway. salam satu hati...
